Why Choose a Valet Ducted Vacuum System over a Traditional Vacuum Cleaner?

Valet ducted vacuum systems have great suction from the powerful motor, the ducted vacuum picks up deep down dirt, dust and debris, even microscopic particles like pollen, mould spores and dust mites.

Unlike a traditional vacuum cleaner which re-circulates air, a valet vacuum system will pick up dust and debris. All the vacuumed dirt, particles and allergens are removed from the home into the canister located at the power unit. This will result in improved air quality because 100% of vacuumed material is removed from the home.

Research has found that allergy sufferers’ symptoms can be improved up to 61% when using a ducted vacuum system. Improved indoor air quality also means a cleaner smelling home.

The convenience and ease of using the ducted system for vacuum cleaning is great, there is no heavy equipment to lug around that might mark your timber floor or furniture, no cords to trip over or catch on furniture. The lightweight hoses and attachments are easy on the back.

Convenient inlet valve locations, placed to your specifications, allow quick and efficient cleaning.

Valet ducted vacuums come with a Five year power unit warranty.

Quiet operation, the noise from the system is generated in an out-of-the-way area, vacuuming makes less noise than a hairdryer or clothes dryer. They are usually quiet enough to vacuum in the same room as a sleeping child!

How to trouble Shoot a Tripped Circuit

RCD Help Guide: The steps to trouble shoot your Tripped Circuit or tripped RCD

As an electrician in Batemans Bay, I often get calls about tripped safety switches (RCDs). This issue is common in many homes. The good news is that you can often fix it yourself. In this guide, I will walk you through the troubleshooting steps.

    Step 1: Identify the Cause

A tripped RCD could be from a faulty appliance or an overloaded circuit. Unplug all appliances from the affected circuit. Common culprits include kettles, toasters, and washing machines. Water exposure and damaged wiring can also cause the RCD to trip.

A tripped safety switch, circuit, RCD, or circuit breaker all refer to the same issue. People use different names, but they all indicate the same electrical problem. When a safety switch trips, your home signals that something is wrong with the electrical wiring.

Step 2: Reset the Safety Switch

Go to your switchboard and locate the tripped RCD. It will be in the “OFF” position. Push the switch back to “ON.” If it stays on, plug in each appliance one at a time. This will help identify a faulty device.

    Step 3: Check for Overloads

If the switch trips again, the circuit may be overloaded. Appliances like dryers and heaters can draw a lot of power. If you use all these appliances at the same time, they may cause the circuit to trip. You could either try to avoid using all the appliances at the same time or ask you electrician for a quote to see if the power could be redistributing to different circuits. on some homes, this adjustment is possible, but in others, the existing electrical setup may not allow for it.

Step 4: Inspect for Faulty Appliances

Plug each appliance into a working power outlet. If one appliance causes the RCD to trip, it is likely faulty. Do not use the appliance until it has been repaired or replaced. Pay close attention to devices with exposed wires or burn marks. Do not use these appliances, they need to be checked by a qualified person or disposed of.

Step 5: Test for a Wiring Fault

If the RCD trips with nothing plugged in, there may be a wiring fault. Water damage, rodent activity, or loose connections can cause issues. Do not attempt to fix wiring issues yourself. It is best left to the experts. Call our licensed electrician who are located in Batemans Bay.

    Step 6: Call an Electrician

If you cannot identify the problem, call our licensed electrician in Batemans Bay. Electrical faults can be dangerous if left unchecked. Our Batemans Bay electrician can test your circuits and repair any hidden issues.

    What is an RCD?

A tripped RCD is a safety feature that protects you from electrical hazards. Understanding how to troubleshoot the issue can save time and money. If in doubt, always seek professional help. Safety should always come first.

A tripping safety switch (RCD) should never be ignored. It serves as a protective measure, indicating that there is something not right with your electrical system. By following these detailed steps, you can isolate the issue and take corrective action.

South Coast Electrical Solutions, your ‘southcoastsparky’ located in Batemans Bay has detailed guide on what to do if your safety switch trips (RCD has tripped). Here are the steps to diagnose and fix the issue, ensuring your home remains safe and your daily routine uninterrupted.

How to trouble Shoot a Tripped Circuit. The steps to follow when a circuit breaker trips:

    • Locate where the switchboard is inside or outside the house.
    • Identify which circuit has been tripped by looking which switch on the breaker has tripped to the ‘off’ position
    • Turn off all appliances and lights which are connected to the circuit that has tripped. Appliance cords also need to be removed from the power point.
    • Flip the circuit breaker switch back to the ‘on’ position to restore power to the circuit.
    • Test the electrical circuit to see if the appliances or lights trip, if they do trip then contact our electricians located in Batemans Bay

The Role of The Safety Switch

The role of the safety switch is to protect you from electric shock. They are designed to disconnect the power quickly (‘trip’) if an electrical fault is detected. This can happen if you have a faulty power point, faulty wiring or the electrical appliance that is being used is faulty. Safety switches are the only devices that will trip in the event of an electric shock to protect humans. Without safety switches, your switchboard has no protection against electric shock.

You may also have RCBO (a ‘Residual Current Breaker with Overcurrent’) in your switchboard.

What is an RCBO (a ‘Residual Current Breaker with Overcurrent’) This is a combination device that incorporates a safety switch and a circuit breaker. RCBOs provide the greatest level of protection against electric shocks and the prevention of overloading the circuits.

Understanding Circuit Breakers, RCBOs and Fuses: Which is best for your home?

Understanding Circuit Breakers and RCBOs and Fuses. Here is our guide to Circuit Breakers and RCBOs and Fuses, their key Differences Explained.

A Guide to Circuit Breakers and RCBOs and Fuses: Key Differences Explained

Understanding Circuit Breakers and RCBOs and Fuses. Here is our guide to Circuit Breakers and RCBOs and Fuses, their key Differences Explained. As a homeowner, ensuring your electrical system is safe and reliable is essential. Fuses, circuit breakers, and RCBOs (Residual Current Breaker with Overcurrent protection) are all designed to protect your home from electrical faults. While they serve similar functions, each works in a different way. In this blog, We’ll explain the differences to help you choose the right option for your home.

    RCD's Circuit breakers and RCBOs
Explain the differences – fuses, MCBs, RCDs, and RCBOs

    Fuses: The Traditional Protector

Fuses are one of the oldest methods of electrical protection. A fuse has a metal wire inside a glass or ceramic casing. This wire melts in the fuse when too much current flows through it, disconnecting the circuit and preventing damage. Porcelain fuses are are traditional house wiring method and are no longer used in modern homes or in switchboard upgrades.

    Porcelain Fuse

For example, if you overload a circuit, like using a toaster, microwave, and kettle on the same circuit, the fuse blows. This stops the electricity flow and prevents overheating. The downside is that fuses need to be replaced every time they blow, which can be inconvenient and costly.

    Circuit Breakers: The Modern Solution

Circuit breakers in your switchboard, offer a more modern approach to protection. Like fuses, they disconnect the circuit when the current exceeds a certain limit. However, instead of melting wire, a circuit breaker trips an internal switch to stop the electricity flow.

    Hager RCD circuit breaker

For example, if you overload a circuit or experience a short circuit, the circuit breaker will trip. Once the issue is fixed, you can reset the circuit breaker. This is more convenient than replacing fuses each time they blow.

    RCBOs: Comprehensive Protection

RCBOs provide both overcurrent and earth leakage protection. An RCBO combines the features of a circuit breaker and an RCD (Residual Current Device). It can detect both excessive current and leakage of electricity to the earth.

    Hager RCBO

For example, let’s say there’s a problem with a faulty washing machine that causes a leak of current into the earth. An RCBO will immediately disconnect the circuit, preventing the risk of electric shock while also protecting the wiring from any overcurrent damage.

    Which Should You Choose?

Circuit Breakers and RCBOs: The type of protection you need depends on your home. If your home still uses fuses, consider upgrading to circuit breakers for added convenience and safety. For the highest level of protection, especially in homes with sensitive appliances, RCBOs are the best choice.

Always use a licensed electrician to install new or replace outdoor power points.

Why do electricians not recommend installing standard power points on the outside of your home?

Indoor power point outlets cannot withstand harsh weather conditions. Property owners and electricians must ensure that a licensed electrician completes their electrical wiring work. Using a non IP rated fitting outside increases the likelihood of moisture or water entering the fitting. This causes nuisance tripping of circuit breakers or damage to the outlet. Standard power points cannot be installed on the outdoor areas of your property and it is recommended only weather-resistant power points to be installed by an licensed Electrician. This is includes all power points installed outdoors, including those around patios, spas, pools, and decks.

  • Are DC Ceiling Fans a better Choice?

Are DC Ceiling Fans a better Choice?

Are DC Ceiling Fans a better Choice?

Here’s why our electricians in Batemans Bay believe that DC ceiling fans are a better choice:

DC Ceiling fans have much Lower Energy Usage

Are DC Ceiling Fans a better Choice? An AC fan on ‘low’ might use around 30 watts of power, whereas the DC ceiling fans on their lowest settings use less than five watts. So, while your electrician may say ‘typical’ energy savings are around 70%, the reality is sometimes even greater. The DC ceiling fans have a lower energy usage equates directly to lower running costs.

DC Ceiling Fans a better Choice as DC Ceiling fans have a Quieter Operation

The Quieter operation is the most popular feature of the DC ceiling fans. They are much quieter than AC fans at low or medium speeds. Are DC ceiling fans a better choice? The DC ceiling fans are practically silent at low speeds, with no detectable motor noise. They are ideal for overnight usage in bedrooms and more pleasant cooling anywhere.

DC Ceiling Fans a better Choice as DC ceiling fans have More Speed Control

DC Ceiling fans have more speed control compared to the old-style AC fans that tend to only to have three-speed settings. If you have a fan with only three speed settings, it’s probably an AC fan. DC fans do not suffer from this limitation. Most of the DC ceiling fans have six speeds!

LED Smart WiFi Enabled DC Ceiling Fan with Variable CCT 20w LED Light and Remote Control.

Are DC Ceiling Fans a better Choice? With the choice of having an LED light, WiFi enabled, DC ceiling fans could be the perfect addition to your home. They have a sleek low profile design and powerful yet silent operating DC motor. Don’t let the efficiency fool you, some DC ceiling fans produce 10,530m³/hr of airflow on the highest of 6 speeds.

Top 6 reasons DC Ceiling Fans are a better Choice

    • 1: Lower Energy Consumption
    • 2: DC Fan Motors are Quieter
    • 3: Better Design
    • 4: Improved Features
    • 5: Multiple speed control settings
    • 6: Longer Lifespan

AC vs the DC Ceiling Fan: Which One is Right for You?

Are DC ceiling fans a better choice? In general, DC ceiling fans are generally faster to respond to remote controls. They have more speed options and even have a reverse function on the remote. This allows you to easily set your fan to summer or winter mode, so you won’t have to get up on a ladder to change from summer to winter setting. The summer/winter mode will enhance the comfort of your home. As a result, DC fans put convenience and control directly into the hands of their users. And by allowing greater control over speed.

What to Consider with Power Point Installation

As with any electrical installation, when you’re dealing with electricity, you should use an electrician who is qualified to perform the installation. When you call South Coast Electrical Solutions, you know you’re calling a company experienced with the right qualifications and licenses. You know you can trust us with your electrical power point installation. South Coast Electrical Solutions are able to replace and install new power points in your property in Batemans Bay, call us today to make an appointment.

An Electrical switchboard upgrade may be required?

An Electrical switchboard upgrade may be required particularly if you live in an older home. You will want your qualified Batemans Bay electrician to check that your current switchboard can accommodate more power points. If you install several new power points and your system will need to be able to cope with the load placed on it. Modern appliances such as computers draw a lot of power and if your switchboard is overloaded it could possibly lead to your power tripping and possibly even a fire.

We recommend only using an licensed electrician to assess your homes switchboard and installing your new power points. Our electricians in Batemans Bay will be able to tell you whether your current switchboard can support the new power points you wish to have installed, or if you need to have your switchboard upgraded

Have your Electrician Check Your Switchboard

Your professional Batemans Bay electricians will also check your switchboard before they begin the power point installation. If you overload the switchboard, it may overheat. This can cause an electrical fire hazard. It pays to keep in mind that the modern appliances around our homes or businesses today use a lot of electricity. Computers, TV’s, printers, air-conditioning units and dryers and ovens all draw a lot of electricity. If you’re adding electrical power points and using many more appliances, your electrician will most certainly need to check if your switchboard can handle the extra electricity you will draw.

You need a new Power Point Installed?

Installation of Power Points vs Use Extension Boards?

We would recommend getting an electrician to install a power point rather than relying on extension cords.

    • Extension cords and power boards often deteriorate over time so if they are not replaced frequently it can increase the chances of a fire or electric shock.
    • Replacing your power boards on a regular basis can get expensive when compared to the one-off cost of installing a new electrical power point.
    • When an extension lead cord is covered over by carpets or furniture, there is no place for heat to escape, increasing the risk of fire. Don’t cover your power cords
    • If appliances with a higher wattage rating than the cord is designed to handle are plugged in, it can impact safety.
    • Plugging one extension cord into another to reach an extra distance is not recommended as it can also be dangerous. Extension cords are only designed to be plugged in to a wall outlet, not another extension cord.
    • Don’t overload your power boards with multiple appliances – this can put an unnecessary drain on the power board and potentially cause a fire or electric shock.

    USB Power Points installation service

Do you need a new power point installed? USB power points can charge your devices more quickly than traditional ones if you choose the right one. When choosing, check the specifications to make sure you choose a USB power point that will charge your device quickly. Do you need help choosing? Talk to our friendly electricians at South Coast Electrical Solutions to give you some guidance to decide.

USB power points are efficient as you are able to charge your devices simultaneously and quickly. • How do you know when you need a switchboard upgrade?

How do you know when you need a switchboard upgrade?

How do you know when you need a switchboard upgrade?

How will you know if you actually need a switchboard upgrade for your property in Batemans Bay? There are a few warning signs that can start to show you that a switchboard upgrade should be upgraded, however, if you are unsure you should always speak to your electrician:

    switchboard-safety-electrician
Out of date switchboards are high fire risks
    • The big one is safety – an old switchboard can be unsafe and, in some cases, quite dangerous
    • Your fuses often trip
    • If you are renovating or moving the electrical wiring
    • Flickering lights
    • If you are putting on solar panels and have an older switchboard
    • You would like RCD safety switches installed for the safety of your family
    • You want to install a new power point and have been told you don’t have enough room on your existing switchboard for the new safety switch
    • The existing switchboard has had cabling that has overheated and has burnt out one or more of the fuse holders
    • Your home’s wiring is quite old
    • If your switchboard is aged or you still have ceramic fuses
    • If you are looking at installing new appliances, then a switchboard upgrade will help protect the new appliances you have purchased

If you are still unsure, call your local electrician in Batemans Bay and we will inspect the switchboard. The electrician will advise you whether it is time to upgrade your switchboard.

Switchboard inspections and checks by electricians

One of our licensed electrician will inspect your switchboard and tell you if your homes electrical switchboard was manufactured before safety switches, (RCD’s). switch-board-upgrade-batemans-bay

When a switchboard upgrade is recommended

If your current switchboard has old ceramic fuses and an asbestos panel, you could be putting your family at risk and our electricians will recommend the need to invest in a switchboard upgrade with RCD’s.

An upgraded switchboard will mean you will have a switchboard that meets the current Australia standard. These have safety switches and circuit breakers installed throughout the board as well as labelled. RCDs (Safety switches) installed in your switchboard may not appear like much, but these devices save lives.

It is important that your home is electrically sound. Make sure your family is safe, ask for a free quote for a switchboard upgrade from one of our licensed electricians at South Coast Electrical Solutions in Batemans Bay.

Who is qualified to complete a switchboard upgrade?

A switchboard upgrade requires a qualified and licensed electrician to complete. An electrician has all the correct equipment and licenses and knowledge to complete the job correctly.

What is involved when the electrician upgrades your switchboard?

Replacing a switchboard involves removing the old switchboard and installing a new switchboard. The Electrician will turn the power off at your property, possibly for up to a day to disconnect the old board and connect the new switchboard.

After the new switchboard is installed, they will need to test all the power points and lights to ensure that no faults are occurring. If a fault is found, the electrician will need to trace the circuit to correct the fault.

By law, a licensed electrician has a responsibility to ensure your property is safe and meets Australian standards.

    switchboard-upgrades

How much does a switchboard upgrade cost?

Upgrading your switchboard from a ceramic fuse type will vary from home to home depending on their complexity. The upgrade price will depend on various factors including the number of circuits you have, how many of the circuits need RCD protection. If the electrician has to disconnect the service, if the electrician has to disconnect the meters, if the consumer mains needs to be upgraded or if the current switchboard has an asbestos panel. Call and ask for a free quote for a switchboard upgrade from one of our licensed electricians at South Coast Electrical Solutions in Batemans Bay.

How important is a functioning switchboard?

Consider how important a fully functioning switchboard is to your home. A switchboard ensures your kettle turns on when you need a cuppa or when you flick on your bathroom light switch. It also ensures that there is power going to all your appliances, your air-conditioner, dishwasher, washing machine and phone chargers.

In order for your switchboard to be able to work at its best level, it needs to be able to handle the electrical load that you are placing on it every day. Older homes did not have the technical advancements as we do now. This means the switchboards didn’t use huge loads of electricity. In today’s fast paced life, you need to ensure your switchboard is designed to handle the electrical load that you are placing on it.

Having a switchboard upgrade with safety switches installed is a sound investment and can significantly reduce the risk of a fuse related fire or personal injury by electrocution from a faulty appliance.

How do I know my switchboard will need to be upgraded?

How will you know if you actually need a switchboard upgrade? Here are a few warning signs that may occur to indicate that a switchboard should be inspected and possibly upgraded. The inspection should always be done by a licensed electrician.

    • How old is your home? If your home is getting older, or you don’t know when your switchboard was installed, it is definitely time to have it inspected by an electrician
    • Appliances tripping the circuit: This could be due to an overloaded circuit or faulty appliances.
    • Fuses that constant blow: a switchboard upgrade may be needed if fuses in your home are regularly blowing
    • Lights that Flicker
    • Power points that are hot to touch
    • Noises: your power isn’t supposed to make a sound, therefore if you hear sizzling or buzzing
    • Re-wireable fuses: if your switchboard does not have circuit breaks and, instead, has re-wireable fuses then you need to have it upgraded as soon as possible. It has been found that the copper fuse wires (which are found in re-wireable fuses) can be a big safety hazard
    • Sparks: if you are finding that your power points spark when plugging in an appliance, this can indicate a switchboard upgrade is needed
    • Shock: finally, if you are receiving a mild electric shock when you put a plug into a power point, this is a sign that you may need a switchboard upgrade

    Are porcelain fuses dangerous?

Older homes that have a switchboard with porcelain fuses can be incredibly dangerous. They carry a high risk of electric shock and fire occurrence. This can be simply due to the age of the switchboard, or because the switchboard in older homes was not designed to manage all the electrical appliances that we use in modern days. Switchboards with the porcelain fuses do not meet current Australian electrical standards and could potentially be dangerous and you will need an electrician to inspect and upgrade your switchboard.

Checking your Smoke Alarm is important.

Smoke alarms are one of the most important piece’s of safety equipment that you have in your home.

Having working smoke alarms is a responsibility that we can’t afford to ignore. The consequences of ignorance can be catastrophic. It’s really easy to have the smoke detectors tested. Even you might be able to check the alarm yourself in a matter of minutes.

If you’re looking for peace of mind and want a licensed electrician to check your Smoke Alarms at your property in Batemans Bay, call South Coast Electrical Solutions.

    Hard-Wired-Smoke-Alarm

Smoke detectors are one of the most important piece’s of safety equipment that you have in the home (along with safety switches). However, sadly, each year people still die in house fires. They die because their smoke detectors didn’t go off. This could be due to flat batteries or someone has removed the batteries because the alarm kept giving a false alarm. Somebody may have even removed their alarms and intended to have them replaced and have forgotten. If you’re looking for a licensed electrician to check your Smoke Alarms at your property in Batemans Bay, call South Coast Electrical Solutions today.

    smoke-alarm-expiry

How long does a smoke alarm last?

Smoke alarms have a ten year shelf life. Replace smoke alarms before the expiry date. We recommend hard wired smoke alarms to be replaced by yourself or a licensed electrician. Even if they are still working . If the alarm in your home is over 10 years old, the alarm will need to be replaced.

There should be a ‘replace by date’ sticker on the smoke alarm. It might be on the outside of the unit or sometimes they are located on the inside of the door. Check the expiry date to see when it should be replaced. The maximum life for a smoke detector is 10 years. What happens if there is no sticker or legible date? Our electricians in Batemans Bay recommended to replace the smoke detector or book in with your electrician to have it replaced.

    Hard-Wired-Smoke-Alarm

    Testing your smoke detectors

Press the test button and the alarm should sound emphatically. Do you have a smoke alarm that is a battery powered alarm? Does the alarm have a weak signal or perhaps it doesn’t sound at all. Change the battery and retest the alarm. If it’s a hardwired alarm and it doesn’t work then contact your electrician immediately, the Hardwired smoke alarms can be installed by South Coast Electrical Solutions. We are your licensed residential electricians located in Batemans Bay.

Make a note to test your smoke alarms

    Make a record

After you have checked your smoke detector and it is working. Put a note on your calendar or put a note in your phone. you should record the date of when the alarm was tested. Schedule a re-test every month. Especially if it’s a battery operated unit.

You can’t be guaranteed that your alarm will provide you with a persistent beeping when it’s on the way out. If you’re looking for a licensed electrician to check your Smoke Alarms at your property in Batemans Bay, call South Coast Electrical Solutions today.

The smoke alarm needs replacement- What type of smoke alarm should do you recommend?

South Coast Electrical Solutions, located in Batemans Bay, will only install top quality photoelectric Australian Standard smoke alarms. This is to comply with NSW legislation. We will issue a certificate of compliance for the alarms in your property.

Photoelectric smoke alarms are what our electricians in Batemans Bay recommend. We do not recommend Ionisation smoke alarms. The Ionisation alarms are not as effective at detecting fires that are slow smouldering. If there is a slow smouldering fire, they are the ones that are undetected are generally the leading cause of deaths due to fires in homes. Photoelectric sensors detect the types of fires that smoulder for hours before bursting into flames. Bathroom Exhaust Fans, which fan to install when renovating your bathroom.

Whether your room requires a ceiling, wall, window, or inline exhaust fan, South Coast Electrical Solutions in Batemans Bay are here to provide you with advice and recommendations when making the choice.

    Exhaust fan bathroom renovation
Ceiling Exhaust Fan Installation Batemans Bay

Which type of Bathroom Exhaust Fan will suit your home?

The exhaust fan positioned correctly, will extract steam, heat and odour from the bathroom and it will also help reduce mould and mildew growth. There are many options for exhaust fans on the market and choice of the exhaust fan depends on the space available in the roof area above the bathroom. Installing an exhaust fan in your bathroom will require a licensed electrician. Do you need an electrician for your bathroom ceiling exhaust fan installation or replacement in Batemans Bay? Call us to make an appointment today.

    Ceiling vented exhaust fan

Ceiling vented exhaust fans are the most popular choice for bathroom and toilet ventilation in Australia. They are very cost effective and do the job effectively. They work well when the roof is tiled as there are small gaps in the tiles to allow proper ventilation. They are usually not suitable for flat roofs or corrugated iron roofs as there may not be enough airflow in the roof space and moisture will build up.

    Heat/Light/Fan Exhausts Units

A great option if you want a bit of warmth in the winter months are the 3 in 1 heat/light/fan units. They include light, exhaust fan and heat lamps. They are able to be switched independently. A few things to consider if you are installing heat/light/fan exhaust units are the running costs of the heat lamps.

    Wall exhaust fan

If your home has a solid concrete ceiling or no ceiling cavity a wall exhaust fan might be the best option for the room. Wall exhaust fans can come with a pull switch or can be wired to a regular switch.

    Window exhaust fan

These fans are installed in glass window panel and are vented directly outside. If the bathroom doesn’t suit a ceiling exhaust fan, these are a great alternative option. Please note that the glass window will require a glazier to cut a hole for the exhaust fan.

*Other exhaust fan options are inline exhaust fans, roof mounted exhaust fans.

    Bathroom Mirrors with lighting

The mirror you install in your bathroom should complement the size of the room. Mirrors come in all different shapes and sizes. Some mirrors come with built in LED lighting and will require a licensed electrician to install power behind the mirror. Ask our electricians to install the wiring whilst the bathroom is in renovation stage.

You may need your switchboard upgraded when you renovate your bathroom

An upgraded switchboard will mean you will have a switchboard that meets the current Australia standard. These have safety switches and circuit breakers installed throughout the board as well as labelled. RCDs (Safety switches) installed in your switchboard may not appear like much, but these devices save lives.

They are designed for general household and business office lighting. They can also be used to highlight specific areas in a room. Downlights can either be either surface-mounted or recessed into your ceiling.

LED downlights produce warm lighting and can greatly save energy when they are in operation. LED lights are energy efficient and last longer than incandescent lights or halogen bulbs.

Why have Energy efficient LED Downlights installed?

LED downlights are brilliant energy-saving alternatives to traditional halogen downlights. Have your downlights replaced by a licensed electrician. South Coast Electrical Solutions are licensed electricians in Batemans Bay and we are committed to electrical safety, call today to make an appointment.

    Are all LED downlights Dimmable?

Be careful when purchasing, Not all LED lights are dimmable. It is important to check the dimming compatibility before making a purchase. If you have purchased a LED downlight, check to make sure the packaging specifically states that it is dimmable. This should be stated in the description or the technical specifications of the light. If you use a non-dimmable LED on a dimmer you will get a lot of flickering and damage the bulb. This will also limit their lifespan. If in doubt check with your electrician or lighting supplier.

The energy efficient benefits from changing your halogen lights to energy saving LED Downlights.

LED is considerably more energy efficient than halogen bulbs, LED lamps are cheaper to run, and you will notice significant reductions in your electricity bills.

The reason LED lamps are more energy efficient is they do not waste energy producing heat, unlike standard light bulbs or halogen downlights, which create both heat and light.

Unfortunately on the market there are some poor quality LED lamps, these lamps may flicker. Ensure you purchase a quality product that complies with the Australian standards.

Energy efficient lighting will help save you money on your electricity bill.

LED’s concentrate simply on the light, and they produce a bright natural light that far outshines the ancient halogen downlights.

The LED lamp is singular and instant, it comes on without flickering and runs soundlessly, compared to gas-like fluoro tubes and compact fluorescent tubes.

Today, LED lamps offer superior lighting compared to when they were first introduced into the market.

South Coast Electrical Solutions are licensed electricians located in Batemans Bay, we are committed to quality and safety and we will ensure quality LED lamps are installed in your property. Call us today to Change your halogen lights to energy efficient LED Downlights

    Ceiling fan design

Ceiling fan design: With so many designs on the market to choose from you could feel a bit overwhelmed with choice. From futuristic designs, ceiling fans with curved blades, colour choice and unique styles. Then you will have to decide on the number fan blades, if you want a DC or AC fan motor, with or without light, and timber fan blades or metal fan blades.

    Ceiling fan blades

Ceiling fan blades: Choosing between metal blade fans and timber blade fans. Metal blade fans produce more noise than timber blades fans. Due to the shape of the blades. Metal fan blades tend to move more air than timber fan blades however the choice of timber fan blades in the bedrooms, might be appealing as they are a lot quieter.

    Ceiling fans motor

DC motors use less energy and operate more quietly than AC motors. They also offer more speed options and a reverse function via remote. While DC fans tend to be pricier due to their newer technology, AC fans are more widely available and can be controlled via wall switches. Though AC fans cost slightly more to run, they remain energy-efficient for cooling.

Maximize Your Cooling Power: Boost Energy Efficiency with a Ceiling Fan Installation.

If you already have an air-conditioning system, installing ceiling fans can significantly enhance its efficiency in cooling your home. Operating a ceiling fan alongside your air-conditioner helps improve the overall effectiveness of the system, reducing energy consumption while maintaining comfort. Though it might seem counterintuitive to run both simultaneously, this strategy actually allows you to raise your air-conditioner’s thermostat without compromising on comfort.

The increased air circulation from the ceiling fan complements the body’s natural cooling process, making you feel cooler by enhancing the rate at which sweat evaporates from your skin. As a result, even if the thermostat is set at 27°C, the room can feel as cool as 24°C.

By combining ceiling fans with your air-conditioning system, you can increase the thermostat by several degrees without sacrificing comfort. The body won’t perceive the change in ambient temperature, as the cooling effect remains consistent. Ceiling fans are particularly effective in summer, as they circulate air, creating a breeze that makes the room feel more comfortable and cooler.

Are ceiling fans cost-effective to operate?

A ceiling fan typically costs no more to run than a 60-watt light bulb. When used alongside your air-conditioner, ceiling fans are highly effective in reducing overall energy consumption. When used correctly, they can help lower your air-conditioner’s running costs. Now could be the perfect time to book your ceiling fan installation in Batemans Bay. Hard wired smoke alarm VS battery operated smoke alarm

South Coast Electrical Solutions recommends wherever possible, hard-wired and interconnected smoke alarms to be installed. Hard-wired smoke alarms receive a consistent 240-volt power supply. They have a battery installed so that if there is a power outage, they will still work. We have licensed electricians to install hard-wired smoke alarms. We only use photoelectric Australian Standard products and comply with all NSW legislation when installing.

Battery powered smoke alarms operate only on the power they receive from the battery. As not all batteries are the same (some batteries are of lower quality than others therefor will not last as long). If you choose battery operated smoke alarms in your property, make sure you choose good quality 9 volt batteries. 10 year lithium batteries are recommended as they last as long as the smoke alarm. If you choose Lead or alkaline batteries they will need to be replace yearly.

    Smoke alarm beeping or chirping

What is causing my smoke alarm to beep or chirp? There is a few reasons that your smoke alarm might be beeping or chirping

    1. The smoke alarm will chirp at regular interval, about once every minute when the battery is getting low and needs to be replace. The best battery to choose is a 9 volt lithium battery, they are long-lasting and engineered to deliver the power you need for the smoke alarm.
    2. Another reason the smoke alarm may chirp is if the battery is loose or improperly installed.
    3. The smoke alarm cover may be dirty. If dust and insects are in the sensing chamber it can cause the alarm to chirp. It is good practice to clean your smoke alarms when you change the battery. See cleaning the smoke alarm tips for cleaning information.
    4. Reset the alarm. Check your manufactures instructions.
    5. If it is still chirping or beeping, request a service from your local electrician

The best hard wired smoke alarms

South Coast Electrical Solutions only recommend photoelectric smoke alarms. Ionisation smoke alarms are not recommended by us as they are not as effective at detecting fires that are slow smouldering. Slow smouldering fires that are undetected are generally the leading cause of deaths due to fires in homes. Photoelectric sensors detect the types of fires that smoulder for hours before the flames.

Hard wired smoke alarms going off for no reason?

Here is a few reasons that your smoke alarm is sounding when no smoke is present.

    • If you alarm is over 10 years old your alarm needs to be replaced. Smoke alarms only have a life of 10 years. The date can be found on the back of the alarm
    • Your alarm may need to be cleaned, see our cleaning tips.
    • Your alarm may need to be reset. Check your manufactures instructions or call for a service from South Coast Electrical Solutions.

    Smoke alarm cleaning tips

If your smoke alarm is hard-wired (connected to 240 volts) we do not recommend that you take it down, always have a licensed electrician service your alarm. If your alarm is a 9 volt battery alarm, remove the alarm from the wall or ceiling and hold the unit on its side. There is a gap between the front cover and the back plate. Use your vacuum cleaner with a crevice tool and suck all around the gap area. Make sure you clean the sensor thoroughly.  Check the expiry date of the unit while you have it down. Reset the alarm and test the unit.

NSW smoke alarm legislation for homeowners.

NSW legislation stipulates that smoke alarms must be installed on every level of your home.

This includes owner occupied homes, rental properties, relocatable homes, caravans and camper-vans or any other residential building where people sleep. To read more about where smoke alarms must be installed, information in tenanted properties, smoke alarm information from the Department of Fair Trading or you can click on this link to our smoke alarm service page.

  • Should you request an electrical inspection before purchasing a new home?

Should you request an electrical inspection before purchasing a new home?

Why you should request an electrical inspection before purchasing a new home?

The main reasons for having an electrician inspect the electrical wiring and switchboard of your home is to give you peace of mind knowing that you and your family will be safe.

Do not put yourself or your family’s lives at risk and know the dangers of electricity.

Potentially fatal electrical accidents can happen in the home and knowledge about the dangers of electricity is everyone’s businesses

When is a electrical inspection is essential?

    • If you come across any old electrical wiring in your home, do not touch any part of it as live parts of the wires may be exposed, especially at power outlet or light switch connections –call a licensed electrician.
    • In older homes most of the electrical wiring used had a rubber protective coating for the wires, over time it deteriorates and crumbles away, leaving the wire exposed and increasing the chance of fire.
    • If your home was built before the 1980s, you really should consider having it inspected to see if you have any aged or faulty wiring.
    • Make it your selling point to present to any potential buyers that a electrical inspection has been performed by a licensed electrician.
    switchboard-upgrade-batemans-bay

The only way to be sure that the electrical wiring in your home is not a risk to you and your family is to have a qualified electrician inspect the wiring in your home.

Switchboard inspections and checks by electricians

If you’re looking for some peace of mind and want a licensed electrician to check your switchboard at your property in Batemans Bay, call South Coast Electrical Solutions.

One of our licensed electrician will inspect your switchboard and tell you if your homes electrical switchboard was manufactured before safety switches, (RCD’s). They will also check it for overall safety. Switchboards are an essential part of your home’s electrical system. Safety switches (RCD’s) are there to protect you and your family from electrocution.

If your current switchboard has old ceramic fuses and an asbestos panel, you are putting your family at risk and our electricians will recommend the need to invest in a switchboard upgrade with RCD’s.

Make sure your family is safe and ask for a free quote for a switchboard upgrade from one of our licensed electricians at South Coast Electrical Solutions in Batemans Bay.

    Safety switches

Information from the NSW Government website indicates that 40% of house fires in NSW each year are caused by electrical faults and electrical appliances. This means up to 1800 house fires each year could have been prevented by getting the wiring checked by a licensed electrician and having safety switches installed.

Usually, properties built during or after the year 2000 will have safety switches installed. For properties built before the year 2000, it’s strongly recommended that you ask a licensed electrician to check.

Test safety switches twice a year to make sure they’re working properly to prevent the deadly risks of electric shock and fire.

    RCD-safety-switch-electrician

Do not put yourself or your family’s lives at risk and know the dangers of electricity.

Potentially fatal electrical accidents can happen in the home and knowledge about the dangers of electricity is everyone’s businesses.

It is important to make sure that the electrical installation in your property is well maintained, and we recommend that you use a licensed electrician to check that it is safe.

You would not delay calling a licensed electrician when a power point or light switch becomes faulty or your home losses power because of faulty wiring. It should be a priority to make sure our homes are safe for our family, and to protect your largest financial investment, your home.

Talk to one of our licensed electricians to perform an audit at your home or investment property.

When the electrician does an audit of your home it will involve a safety check making sure your electrical circuits and equipment are not overloaded. The electrician will pick up deficiencies and potential problems. These issues are then highlighted to the property owners so that any electrical hazards can be rectified immediately. Our electricians can also inspect older houses that have not been inspected for many years. Older homes may still be equipped with faulty earthing or bonding which means they may be have higher electrocution risk and will need to be rectified immediately by a licensed electrician.

Having an electrician inspect your property could uncover some issues which, once repaired, could save you money.

Listed below are some simple visual checks you can do yourself:

    • Check that you have RCD protection in your switchboard.
    • Make sure that your power points are not overloaded.
    • Ensure that power points are not damaged.
    • Check that visible cables and leads are in good condition.
    • Check that your light fittings are not visibly damaged.
    • Check your downlights are in good working condition.
    • Check that you are not storing combustible materials around your switchboard.
    • Do not use the top of the microwave for storing items.
    • Never trail cables under carpets or rugs.
    • Do not coil cables while they are being used.
    • Never take mains-powered electrical items into the bathroom.
    • Switch off your electrical items when they are not in use.
    • Ensure the electrical items you use meet Australian Standards

Anyone can do a quick visual check to ensure their home is electrically safe but having a licensed electrician perform an electrical safety check will give you peace of mind.

Early detection of potential electrical dangers in and around your home could potentially reduce serious risks issues.

    Electrical safety in rental properties.

It is the responsibility of a landlord to ensure their rental property is safe and secure. When a property is rented, the landlord or agent must take steps such as making repairs so the property is fit to live in.

Before a tenant moves in a landlord or agent must fill out a condition report and give two paper copies, or one electronic copy, to the tenant prior to or at the time of the tenancy agreement being signed.

    The condition report includes whether there are;

    • visible hazards relating to electricity (e.g. a loose or damaged electricity outlet socket, loose wiring or sparking power points)
    • smoke alarms installed (as required by legislation) and the dates that they were last checked and had battery replacement
    • safety switches and confirmation that they are working, which can only be known if a test has been done

Any electrical fault in a rental property either before or during a tenancy would be considered an urgent repair and tenants need to notify the landlord or agent right away so arrangements can be made to for repairs to be done as soon as possible. You can find more information on NSW Fair Trading’s repairs and maintenance in rented properties page.

The sculpture sits beside the Clyde River on Beach Road Batemans Bay, just up from the Batemans Bay Soldiers Club, and will remain in this position as a permanent attraction. It is the first of many permanent sculptures that will be displayed in Batemans Bay over the coming years.
At the opening, the artist, Jesse Graham from Eden, explained how he came to create the piece from a buoy that washed up the creek after a major flood. The piece is made from that buoy and he has made it to look like an upside down octopus. The sculpture stands over 6ft in height and has one of the best positions in Batemans Bay with the Clyde River as its back drop.
After the unveiling of the “Buoyansea” sculpture, prizes and awards were presented to sculptors that entered the Sculpture on Clyde competition.
71 art pieces are on display this week, 25th August to 3rd September, on the Clyde River foreshore, Clyde Street, Batemans Bay. Many of the art pieces are available to purchase from the artists.
Well worth a visit. As the presenter of the main award, Sculpture on Clyde Patron, Terry Snow said, Batemans Bay is a place where people will come to cleanse their soul. For more information on the event visit their website or Facebook page, links below.

  • Will LED panel lights save my business money?

Will LED panel lights save my business money?

Why LED panel lights will save your business money.

How can my business safe money on on electricity bill?

Is your business looking for ways to save money? Many businesses, commercial shops and offices are now considering changing to LED panel lights. LED lighting benefits are too good to ignore.

Here are the top four reasons to change to LED panel lights for your business.

    Energy cost savings:

Rising electricity costs are a big cost to businesses. With no decreases from electricity companies on the horizon, businesses continually need to look for ways to cut costs.  When businesses change their fluorescent lights to LED panel lights they will instantly benefit from lower energy costs. Therefore your business will be benefiting from lower electricity bills. What are the cost benefits to your business when changing to LED lighting? LED panel lights use approximately 30% to 50% more power than that of a fluorescent light.

    Sophisticated look:

LED panel lights have a very sleek design and are aesthetically pleasing to the eye. They emit pleasant uniform lighting colours. The shape of the LED panel light is ultra-thin and there is a great range of lighting colours to choose from to suit your work space. The use of LED panel lights in your office will create the professional appearance. LED panel lights will compliment your professional appearance.

    Long-Life Span:

Many businesses have Fluorescent lighting already however if you are considering new lighting, changing to LED panel lighting. LED panel lighting are a great way to reduce your energy costs. A typical fluorescent tube has a lifespan of approximately 9,000 hours. LED panel lights have a lifespan of approximately 50,000 hours which is five times longer than the old fluorescent fittings.

The lifespan of the fluorescent tube is affected by the turning on and off of the light. The more that they are turned on and off the shorter the life span of the tube. LED bulbs do not have this limitation.

No tubes or starters to replace:

Given the design of the LED panel light, it is relatively easy for our electricians to install LED panel lights into existing buildings. LED blubs generate bright, directional lighting, without the extra heat, which means that you can have the light you need exactly where you need it. Compared to fluorescent lights that are not as bright and the light that is produced dissipates easily. The benefits of having the directional lighting can significantly improve productivity and make it easier to see paperwork, computer screens or your stock.

  • Electrical Safety for you home

    Electrical Safety for you home

The top reasons for having an electrical safety inspection.

The main reasons for having an electrician inspect the electrical wiring and switchboard of your home is to give you peace of mind knowing that you and your family are safe.

    switchboard-upgrades

When is an electrical inspection is essential?

    • If your home is more than 25 years old and has not had an inspection
    • Or if you have old wiring in your home.
    • If you are selling your property it is a good selling point to present to any potential buyers that an inspection has been performed by a licensed electrician.
    • The most recent reason for having an electrical inspection on your electrical wiring is the ACCC infinity cable safety recall. ACCC issued a national recall in 2014 “testing has found that the cables will degrade prematurely and insulation could break and expose live conductors resulting in possible electric shock or fires”

Talk to one of our expert electricians to perform an audit at your home or investment property.

    switch-board-electrical-inspection-batemans-bay

What does an electrical audit involve?

The audit of your home will involve a safety check making sure the electrical circuits and equipment are not overloaded. Deficiencies and potential problems are easily highlighted so that any electrical hazards in the installation can be rectified immediately. Our electricians also inspect older houses that have not been inspected for many years may. Older homes may still be equipped with faulty earthing or bonding which means they may have higher electrocution risk and will need to be rectified immediately by a licensed electrician. Talk to one of our expert electricians to perform an audit at your home or investment property.

Why is it important to check the electrical?

What is involved if the Electrical switchboard needs to be upgraded?

You may need to consider an electrical switchboard upgrade. Especially if you live in an older home where the switchboard has not been upgraded. The electrician will need to check the current switchboard can accommodate more power points. If several new power points are installed your electrical system will need to be able to cope with the load placed on it. If the switchboard is out of date it could become overloaded. This could possibly lead to your power tripping and possibly even a fire.

We recommend only using an licensed electrician to assess your homes switchboard and installing your new power points. Our electricians will be able to tell you whether your current switchboard can support the new outdoor power points you wish to have installed. They can also let you know if you need to have your switchboard upgraded

Poor quality infinity electrical cable has been installed in homes. Could your home be effected?

    The ACCC estimates:

    • Over 40,000 homes and business in Australia could be effected from this poor quality infinity electrical cable installed between 2010 and 2013
    • 4000 kilometres of defective cables have been installed
    • Nearly ½ the cable was installed in NSW homes

What you should do if you think you might be effected by the cable recall?

If you have purchased a new property, renovated or had any electrical work done between 2010 and 2013, South Coast Electrical Solutions is urging you to call now and get your wiring inspected by a licensed electrician.

The good news for South Coast Electrical Solutions customers is none of our customers were affected by the infinity cable recall as South Coast Electrical Solutions did not purchase any infinity branded cable. However unfortunately we do not know where the cable may have been installed by DIY’s and other electricians. The only way to check if the infinity cable has been installed in your property is to have a licensed electrician check.

Find out more about the recall.

Ceiling Fan Installer – Batemans Bay

If you are looking to install a ceiling fan in your property here are some options for you to consider.

Ceiling fan are great in summer creating a tropical like feel as they move the air around and can make you feel cooler from the fan breeze by making the air temperature more comfortable.

With so many designs on the market to choose from you could feel a bit overwhelmed with choice. From futuristic designs, ceiling fans with curved blades, colour choice and unique styles. Then you will have to decide on the number fan blades, if you want a DC or AC fan motor, with or without light, and timber fan blades or metal fan blades.

One thing to remember is your ceiling fan must be installed by a licensed electrician for safety and for your ceiling fans warranty.

South Cost Electrical Solutions can give you a quote to install ceiling fans in your property in Batemans Bay, call and speak to one of our friendly staff today.

Metal Blades, Timber Blades or Plastic Blades

One important choice you will have to make is choosing between metal blade fans and timber blade fans.
Metal blade fans produce more noise than timber blades fans. Due to the shape of the blades. Metal fan blades tend to move more air than timber fan blades however the choice of timber fan blades in the bedrooms, might be appealing as they are a lot quieter.

    DC or AC Motor

Ceiling fans are now available with either DC or AC motors, so what is the difference between DC and AC motors? DC ceiling fan motors use less energy than standard AC ceiling fans and are extremely quieter to run, they have more speed options and a reverse function on the remote. DC fans, when compared to AC fans in price are generally more expensive as DC fans are still relatively new to the market. If you are choosing an AC ceiling fan you will find there is more choice on the market compared to the DC fan range. AC fans can be controlled from wall control. AC fans cost a little more to run compared to the DC motor, however are still extremely energy efficient for in terms of cooling costs.

What does a ceiling fan cost to run?

The most a ceiling fan will cost to run is approximately 3 cents per hour, which is the same cost as running as a 60 watt light globe. Ceiling fans are also efficient in keeping your air-condition running costs low when you use them together, which could reduce your air-conditioner power costs up to 40%

How much will a ceiling fan cost to install?

Ceiling fans must be installed by a licensed electrician for safety and for your ceiling fans warranty. Factors that might affect the installation price will include if the new ceiling fan is replacing an existing fan or light, your ceiling height and access to your ceiling and wall cavity. South Cost Electrical Solutions can give you a quote to install, call and speak to one of our friendly staff today.

    After the Christmas Season

Packing away Christmas lights can be a tiring job, especially as the January weather is usually the hottest time of year. If you look after your Christmas lights you will get a longer life from them. Christmas lights are designed for temporary use, leaving the lights up for extended periods will deteriorate the life of the lights and also create a higher risk of electrical hazard.

    • Unplug the Christmas lights before you start taking them down.
    • Store and pack Christmas lights in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
    • Remove batteries from 12Volt Christmas lights.
    • Always store Christmas lights so that the wires and lights do not become damaged.
    • As you take down the lights, inspect the lights and wiring and dispose of any that are not safe.
    • Store the lights in the original packaging.
    • Keep the sets together, the lights with the correct power transformer.
    • Wrap the cords around your arm, and then transform them to a large zip lock bag. Label the bag with the location that they came down from, and if they are indoor or outdoor lights. This is so you don’t forget next time.
    • Store Christmas lights in a dry area.

To get any further advise on safe Christmas lighting contact a licensed electrician.

  • The Benefits of having RCD’s installed in your property

The Benefits of having RCD’s installed in your property

What is an RCD or safety switch, and why they are important?

The technical term for an RCD is “Residual Current Device”. An RCD, also known as a safety switch, when installed, is designed to save lives from an electric shock if you or someone in your home touches something live, such as a bare wire.

RCD’s offer a level of protection that ordinary fuses and circuit breakers cannot provide. Homes built in Australia from 1990 to now should have RCDs installed on power circuits and homes built after 2000 should have RCDs on light circuits as well, however many properties built prior to this, do not have them installed.

RCDs are designed to protect lives

An RCD is designed to protect lives against the risk of electrocution. In a normal power circuit, the electrical current flows through an appliance and back to the supply. If the appliance has a fault, the electrical current can travel through a person to earth, causing death or serious injury. The RCD is designed to cut the electrical current flowing through the circuit and will switch the power circuit off in as little as 30 milliseconds. Each year many people in Australia are killed or seriously injured from electrical accidents from circuits that are not protected. These deaths and injuries are avoidable by having RCDs installed.

    Protect your family

It could be one of your family members using an appliance that becomes faulty or from something as simple as putting a picture hook into a wall and making contact with an electrical cable. RCD’s are installed in the properties switchboard to individual or groups of circuits. They provide a very high level of protection to all the wiring and power points on the circuit and any connected electrical appliances. Although RCD protected circuits reduce the risk of death and or injury from electric shock, it does not mean that you should not be careful when using electrical powerpoints, switches or appliances.

    Have your wiring checked

Having your wiring checked at least every 10 years to ensure your families safety or if you find any faults with your properties wiring you should contact a licensed electrician to repair immediately.

All of our highly qualified electricians are experts in the field and can do any electrical work you need done. Our electricians are friendly and helpful and will go over and above to ensure you receive the best service.

RCD safety switchRCD made by Clipsal

    switchboard safety
Out of date switchboards are high fire risks

    switchboard upgrade

How much does RCD protection cost?

A licensed electrician will need to install RCD’s (safety switches) in your property to ensure your house is protected. The cost will vary depending on the size of your switchboard and if your switchboard and cabling needs upgrading. South Coast Electrical Solutions are your local electricians located in Batemans Bay, call us for a quote.

How do I check if I already have RCDs installed in my property?

RCDs have a switch and also a button labelled ‘Test’. If there is no test button then you probably only have circuit breakers.

Is a circuit breaker the same as a RCD/safety switch?

No. RCDs are primarily for personal safety to prevent injuries and save lives. Circuit breakers protect the cabling and appliances from excess current but will not protect people that are in contact with them and will rarely turn off when someone receives an electric shock.

How many RCD’s do I need?

It is recommended that all circuits have RCD protection.

Do I have to test the RCD’s?

You should press the ‘test’ button at least every three months to make sure the RCD is functioning correctly. After doing this you may need to reset some of your appliances such as clocks. If the RCD does not trip or will not reset, call your electrician immediately as there may be a problem with an appliance or somewhere in the electrical installation.

  • Are your smoke alarms installed in the correct area and still in date?

Are your smoke alarms installed in the correct area and still in date?

Are you putting your family at risk? Every home in NSW must have smoke alarms installed, it is the law

Smoke alarms are an essential part of a home’s fire escape plan. If there is a fire, a smoke alarm will give you an early warning so you can get outside quickly. At night when we are sleeping we have no sense of smell and that is the biggest risk if there is a house fire. Unfortunately we see this situation on the news all too often.

It is your duty of care to you and your family to have your smoke alarm maintained and tested. Maintaining a smoke alarm is more than just changing the battery, cleaning the unit and testing the alarm, you need to know that it will work in a fire.

What many people do not realise is that smoke alarms only have a life of 10 years and they need to be replaced before they expire.

It is best to use interconnected smoke alarms, when one smoke alarms sounds, they all sound.

Test your smoke alarms at least once a month.

When you replace the battery in your smoke alarm, always use a quality branded battery.

There are two kinds of alarms for domestic properties, photoelectric and ionisation. The alarms work in different ways to detect smoke, both types are capable of meeting Australian Standards.

To maximise the opportunity for early warning in all fire scenarios, Fire & Rescue NSW, recommends the installation of photoelectric alarms, hard wired and interconnected in all residential accommodation.
